Of course as we leave one decade and move to another one it is natural to reflect upon the years past. As every crappy entertainment magazine will do I will follow.
Don't worry I know you won't agree with this list. Why? Because every one's taste in movies is different. That's what makes these things fun, because there is no wrong or right answer to this. But here is what I think are my 15 favorite movies of the last 10 yrs. These are in no order or ranking.....
1. Almost Famous(2000)- When I saw it, it was one of the most awesome movies I had seen in a long time. Good music, awesome subject matter and Cameron Crowe is great at setting a scene that looks like 1970's America. 10 yrs later I still watch this movie once a year.
2. Shrek(2001)- In my opinion the best animated movie to come out this decade. Always funny and combines fairy tail with outright mockery of Disney. Always a plus. And pretty much the only thing that keeps Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy employed anymore.
3. Training Day(2001)- Until Joker in Dark Knight I hadn't seen a more evil villain this decade than Alonzo. This dude was pure evil, crooked cop who was more of a thug than the dudes he was trying to put away. He was so good as a bad guy that it actually made Ethan Hawke believable as a good guy.
4. Bourne Identity(2002)- Honestly, before this movie came out, who thought that Hollywood could make Matt Damon a bad ass? I mean Will Hunting was a tough guy but then he cried like a baby at the end on Mork's shoulder. All the pretty horses, school ties, Legend of bagger vance, the talented Mr. Ripley the list of weak roles goes on and on. Then came this movie, where Damon kicked ass like Seagal did in the 90's. He showed us.......well played sir well played.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean(2003)- Just an awesome fantasy/action movie. Johnny Depp's performance was on point as a drunken ship captain. It mixed fun, action, and humor. And it made Disney movies cool to watch again.
6. Napoleon Dynamite(2004)- Say what you will about this movie but it was dumb enough to make you laugh. It was a sleeper hit and at one point in 04 it was cool to say vote for Pedro. For some reason the dull unemotional acting worked for this movie. I think it's because in high school for everyone there was a guy like this dufas.
7. Ray(2004)- Best Biopic to come out in a long time. Great music, well directed, Oscar for Jamie Foxx. Also very informative, I mean how many of you knew Ray was a heroin addict till you saw that movie?
8. The 40-yr old Virgin(2005)- This brought back the rated R comedy in a time where everything was going PG 13. It launched the career's of Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, and put Paul "I was in clueless in 95 remember me" Rudd back on the map. It was also the movie that started the Apatow standard of mixing shock humor with a sentimental story. There was so much funny stuff in this movie that if you haven't seen it, stop reading and go watch it!
9. Sideways(2005)- I'm yet to meet anyone other than myself that likes this movie but it was nominated for several Oscars. To me it was the beginning of the modern Bromance movies. And come on, who ever thought that dude from wings would get nominated for an Oscar?
10. Star Wars:Revenge of the Sith(2005)- In the 90's when Lucas announced that he was making prequels to the original trilogy this is what I expected. Not Phantom, not attack of the clones(or Titanic on Tatoone as I call it). This was the action pack, light saber dueling, explanation as to why Vader is the way he is. Yeah it was dumb reasoning but at least we know now! I thought it was damn good(no match for the Original Trilogy but far better than the 2 before). If only C3PO had picked up a light saber and kicked some ass it would have been perfect!
11. The Departed(2006)- This was just a great movie about crooked cops and drug dealers in Boston. Awesome cast, great director who made it look real authentic. Now some of the accents were not spot on but the acting was so it is forgiven at least by me.
12. Clerks II(2006)- Slackers still at 30. I think this is about the best and most meaningful movie Smith has done since Chasing Amy. Right amount of humor, right amount of story. Always great to see what happens to characters after the movie ends. Hopefully there will be a clerks 3. Middle aged and still slacking!
13. Superbad(2007)- If 40 yr old virgin brought back the R rated comedy this guy perfected it. Everyone had that one weird night out with your buddies in high school and this movie reminds you of it. This movie put Jonah Hill and Michael Cera on the map. Both were extremely funny and have gone on to do great movies since. I sometimes find it had to sit through an hr and a half movie that takes place all in the same night put this one pulled it off.
14. The Dark Knight(2008)- The Joker...ENOUGH SAID!
15. Star Trek(2009)- One of the best reboots to a movie in a long time. Cast was perfect(could you get a better Spock?) Great action and suspense. This made me like Star Trek and trust me I am not a Trek fan!!
Well that's it. Feel free to comment and add to it. Like I said before movies are the opinion of the person watching them so my list and yours are probably completely different.
